Shanghai’s record heat wave in 137 years failed to deter Expo visitors whose number reached 328,000 yesterday.

A glaring sun drove the temperature to 39.8 degrees Celsius during the day before a thunderstorm in the late afternoon cooled down the temperature.

It was the fourth consecutive day with the mercury reaching over 39 degrees, making it the hottest summer in Shanghai since the city began to have a weather record, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.

Among yesterday’s visitors, 98,200 came in tour groups and 41,738 were local residents who used complimentary tickets offered by the Municipal Government. A total of 55,195 tickets were sold at the gates, 25,224 of them for evening visit.

As of 6pm, 62,000 visitors had passed through Houtan entrance, compared with 48,000 at Shangnan Road entrance, 58,000 at Changqing Road entrance and 41,000 at Gaoke Road W. entrance.

Some 7,485 volunteers worked on the site and the five on-site clinics treated 431 visitors by 4pm yesterday. Eighteen of them suffered minor injuries and 71 suffered sunstroke.

The Expo Organizer expects some 113,500 group visitors today.

All entertainment activities at the Expo site were cancelled yesterday to observe a national mourning for the victims who died in landslides in Zhouqu County, Gansu Province. All flags at the Expo venues were flying at half-staff and all background music was turned off. The Gansu Pavilion held a mourning ceremony.

Performance turned the Lithuania Pavilion into a sea of joy this afternoon as the pavilion celebrated the coronation of its first King Mindaugas in 1253.

About 10,000 visitors received a crown from the pavilion as a present.

The design of the pavilion came from flowers in bud, symbolizing a vigorous, prosperous and booming country and its cities. The exhibition centers on the success stories of urban development, architectural and cultural heritage, natural protection, people’s achievements, sports and scientific development, among others.

It aims to showcase how Lithuanians get along well together and take an eco-friendly approach towards nature in the process of developing the country into an important international political, cultural and economic center in the Baltic Sea region.
